The Cairo Genizah is the subject of BBC Radio 3's The Essay between 27th - 31st May 2013. Each weekday night, staff from the Library's Genizah Research Unit will be giving a lively 15-minute talk about the historical aspects of the Genizah Collections at Cambridge University Library.
The series begins with Dr. Miriam Wagner on the exciting story of the discovery, followed by Dr. Ben Outhwaite on the interplay between Jews, Muslims and Christians in the Mediterranean Society. Midweek sees Dr. Melonie Schmierer-Lee discussing what the Genizah tells us about the lives of medieval women, with Dr. Dan Davies following on with three important but quite different figures from medieval Egypt. Finally, Dr. Gabriele Ferrario delves into magic, alchemy and the occult.
The Essay will be broadcast at 10.45pm Mon-Fri, and the shows will be available on BBC iPlayer or to download as a podcast after the event. More information can be obtained through the following link:
