Leon Saltiel in conversation with Maria Margaronis
Actress Ruth Rosen will be reading a few of the letters
Thessaloniki, known as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans,” has a Jewish history spanning over 2,000 years. It became a major centre of Sephardic Jewish life after the 1492 expulsion from Spain. Before World War II, around 50,000 Jews lived there, contributing greatly to the city’s culture and economy.
Sadly, most of the community was deported to concentration camps during the Holocaust, where the majority perished.
During this event the author, Leon Saltiel will focus his discussion on his book, ‘Do Not Forget Me’: Three Jewish Mothers Write to Their Sons from the Thessaloniki Ghetto.
An award-winning historian specialising in the Holocaust in Greece, Leon serves as Director of Diplomacy and Representative at UN Geneva and UNESCO.
He also coordinates efforts to counter antisemitism for the World Jewish Congress, leading the WJC office in Geneva.
Maria Margaronis writes for the Guardian, London Review of Books, The TLS, and New York Times. She writes and presents radio documentaries for the BBC. She also translates modern Greek poetry to English and teaches Writing at Birkbeck.
